Calcutta Tram ways was developed during the period of British in India. The first Tram Car tram Car was rolled introduced in Calcutta( now Kolkata) on 24 February 1873 with Horse Driven Coaches running between Sealdah and Armenian Ghat. Due to poor Patronage, the service was shut down and it was reintroduced when the Calcutta Tramways company came into existance in 1880. The Trams started running on electric tracks in the year 1902. The electrification process resulted in an increase in Patronage for Trams. In 1943, Calcutta had a complete network of Tram service across the city.

In 1927, the Calcutta Tram ways company was reorganised under a new name, Calcutta Tram ways worker Workers Union. After the independance of India, the Trams were nationalised under the Calcutta TramWays act of 1967.
